3-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Bwindi

Travellers walking a red-earth forest trail

A 3-day gorilla trekking safari from Kigali is the shortest way to trek for mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park without cutting corners. Kigali is often the fastest gateway to southern Bwindi, and this itinerary is built around that: fly into Rwanda’s capital, cross into Uganda’s south-western highlands, and trek in the Nkuringo sector with two nights at Orugano Bwindi Lodge. It suits business travellers extending a trip, couples, visitors with limited time, photographers, and anyone who wants a focused gorilla trek rather than a long multi-stop circuit.

Why Starting in Kigali Works for a Short Bwindi Safari

The drive from Kigali to the Nkuringo sector takes roughly 4–5 hours, including the Rwanda–Uganda border crossing. This is an estimate that depends on border and road conditions; we confirm the route and pickup time at booking. Kigali has strong flight connections and efficient road access to southern Bwindi, which makes a focused three-day cross-border gorilla trek practical.

Two border crossings serve this route: Cyanika and Katuna. We confirm the crossing point and pickup time with you before travel, and your guide plans the day around them.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a single visa covering Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, and it may suit travellers combining these countries. We do not confirm visa requirements on your behalf: please check current requirements with the official immigration service or the relevant embassy before departure.

For the same gorilla experience, Uganda is generally the lower-cost option: the standard foreign non-resident Uganda gorilla permit is US$800, compared with US$1,500 in Rwanda. Both are standard foreign non-resident rates, and government tariffs can change, so we confirm the current rate when quoting. For a fuller comparison, read our Kigali vs Entebbe gorilla trekking guide, or consider the 3-day fly-in gorilla safari from Entebbe as an alternative.

Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi

Your safari begins when you land in Kigali. The drive to Orugano Bwindi Lodge crosses Rwanda’s rolling hills before the border crossing into Uganda’s south-western highlands, with plenty to see along the way.

On arrival you settle in, then stretch your legs on the Kahurire Trail walk, a gentle 3-kilometre acclimatisation walk through community land with views over the forest. You pass small farms and gardens, meet local people going about their day, and get a first look at Bwindi’s birds and plants with your guide.

Practical tip: use this walk to test your boots and adjust your gear before the trek.

Accommodation: Orugano Bwindi Lodge, a boutique lodge in the Nkuringo sector. Full board.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

After breakfast, you head to the Nkuringo gorilla trekking briefing point for the morning briefing. The lodge is about a 10–15-minute walk from the briefing point, and a short drive can be arranged instead. The briefing covers safety protocols, photography guidelines and what to expect during your hour with the gorillas.

The time needed to locate the gorillas varies because the families move through the forest. The walk can be relatively short or extend for several hours. The terrain is steep and uneven, and it can be muddy and slippery after rain. Your guide controls the pace, and porters are available to carry day packs and help on the trail. Tell your guide and the briefing team about any mobility concerns before the trek, and let us know in advance when you book.

Once you reach your assigned gorilla family, you spend one hour with them. You may see juveniles playing, mothers with infants and the silverback watching over the group. Sightings are not guaranteed, but trackers locate the families each morning and the guides work from their reports.

Photography: no flash photography. Follow your ranger’s instructions on the required distance from the gorillas; your guide will position you for good views within the rules.

In the evening, a guided community walk introduces you to the area around the lodge: local farming, daily life, and the crafts and customs of the communities living beside the forest.

Accommodation: Orugano Bwindi Lodge, our boutique property. Full board.

Day 3: Return to Kigali

Your final morning is quiet: breakfast with a view, time to pack and, if your flight times allow, a short morning activity before the drive. The return journey follows the same route to Kigali, arriving with buffer time for international departures.

Travel tip: share your international flight times with us when booking so we can set your pickup time, and tell us if you would like a morning activity where timings allow.

What Makes This Short Safari Different

This itinerary concentrates on one experience: the gorilla trek. There are no complicated routing decisions and no filler days. The permit, the lodge and the transfers all serve that single focus.

Location matters most on a three-day trip. The boutique Orugano Bwindi Lodge is about a 10–15-minute walk from the Nkuringo gorilla trekking briefing point, which means short transfers and more time in the forest.

For transparency: Orugano Safaris and Orugano Bwindi Lodge are under common ownership, so accommodation, permits, transfers and trekking logistics can be coordinated directly by one team. The lodge suits travellers trekking from Nkuringo; for other itineraries and sectors we place guests at other properties across Bwindi, matched to their permits. See our guide to where to stay in Bwindi, or read more about Orugano Bwindi Lodge. For walking routes from the lodge, see the Nkuringo to Buhoma walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to travel from Rwanda into Uganda?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a single visa covering Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya and may suit this itinerary, but we do not confirm visa requirements on your behalf. Please check current requirements with the official immigration service or the relevant embassy before departure.

How long is the drive from Kigali to Bwindi?

Roughly 4–5 hours including the Rwanda–Uganda border crossing, depending on the crossing point and border and road conditions on the day. We confirm the route and timing at booking.

How hard is the gorilla trek?

The terrain is steep and uneven and can be muddy and slippery after rain. The time needed to locate the gorillas varies because the families move through the forest; the walk can be relatively short or extend for several hours. Your guide controls the pace and porters are available. Tell your guide and the briefing team about any mobility concerns before the trek.

Are gorilla sightings guaranteed?

No. Sightings are never guaranteed. Trackers locate the families each morning and guide the trekking groups from those reports, which makes an encounter likely, but nothing can be promised.

Can I do this trip privately?

Yes. The safari is arranged as a private trip, with your own guide, your own vehicle and transfers arranged around your party.

Can I extend it?

Yes. Popular extensions include the 4-day Bwindi gorilla and Batwa safari, the 5-day golden monkey and gorilla safari, and longer combinations such as the 7-day Remarkable Rwanda Uganda safari.
