Uganda Safaris
Orugano Safaris plans Uganda safaris for travellers who want gorillas, chimpanzees and savannah wildlife in one country, arranged by a team that lives at the edge of Bwindi itself. Every itinerary we build starts with permits and routing rather than fixed departure dates, so the trip fits your travel days instead of the other way round.
We are a Ugandan operator based in the Nkuringo sector of southern Bwindi. Our team handles permit applications, private 4×4 transport with a driver-guide, lodge bookings and sector planning directly, and we answer practical questions before you commit to anything.

Why Uganda, and Why With Us
Uganda rewards a long journey more than almost any other safari country. In a single itinerary you can track mountain gorillas in Bwindi, follow chimpanzees through Kibale or Kalinzu, watch lions, elephants and hippos on the savannah, stand below Murchison Falls where the Nile forces itself through a narrow gorge, and spend time with communities around the forests. Few destinations combine primates and classic big-game viewing in one trip.
What makes Orugano different comes down to location and structure. We are locally based, not an overseas agency reselling someone else’s ground handling. We operate our own boutique lodge in Nkuringo. Planning is permit-led: we check what is available for your dates before promising a route. Transport is by private 4×4 with a driver-guide rather than shared vehicles, and we book transfers and lodges directly instead of passing them through intermediaries.

Start With the Permit, Then Build the Route
The single most useful planning insight for a Uganda safari is this: check permit availability first, then build the route around it. Gorilla permits are issued for specific trekking locations and specific dates. A permit for Nkuringo cannot simply be moved to Buhoma once issued, and accommodation near one sector does not automatically suit a trek starting in another. Permits for popular sectors and dates sell out months ahead, especially from June to September and December to February.
So the sequence is: confirm which sector has permits for your travel window, then choose accommodation and transport that align with that same part of Bwindi. Our guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda explains how permit booking works in practice, and our Bwindi destination page compares the four trekking sectors in detail.

Choose Your Uganda Safari by Length
Most travellers pick their itinerary by how many days they have and where they land. The two groups below cover the routes we are asked for most often; both can be extended or adjusted as private departures.
Short Gorilla Safaris (3–6 Days)
Best for travellers focused on gorillas with limited time — usually arriving through Kigali into southern Bwindi, or flying from Entebbe to Kisoro.
- 3-Day Gorilla Safari from Kigali — one of the shortest practical road itineraries into southern Bwindi.
- 3-Day Fly-In Gorilla Safari — avoid the long overland journey from Entebbe by flying to Kisoro.
- 5-Day Golden Monkey & Gorilla Safari — two rare primates across Bwindi and Mgahinga.
- 5-Day Uganda Gorilla & Culture Safari — gorillas, Lake Mutanda and a Batwa community visit.
- 6-Day Uganda Gorilla Habituation Safari — up to four hours with a gorilla family undergoing habituation, accompanied by the authorised field team.
Classic Wildlife Circuits (8–12 Days)
Best for seeing Uganda as a complete destination — gorillas plus chimpanzees, savannah game and scenery, usually starting from Entebbe.
- 8-Day Best of Uganda Safari — mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, Queen Elizabeth wildlife and Kalinzu chimpanzee tracking in one western Uganda circuit.
- 11-Day Uganda Gorilla & Primate Safari — four national parks, from Murchison Falls to Bwindi.
- 12-Day Ultimate Uganda Wildlife, Primate & Nature Safari — our most comprehensive single-country itinerary.
If none of these lengths fits, our guide to 7, 10, 12 or 14-day Uganda safaris breaks down what each extra day realistically adds to a route.
Should You Arrive Through Entebbe or Kigali?
Kigali is usually the shorter ground transfer to southern Bwindi, which is why most short gorilla trips run through Rwanda. Entebbe suits broader circuits that take in Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls alongside the gorillas. Our Kigali vs Entebbe comparison covers transfers, costs and visa considerations in full.

What Each Destination Adds to Your Uganda Safari
Each of the places below adds something the others do not. Use the table to decide which ones justify the driving time on your route.
| Destination | What it adds | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Bwindi Impenetrable National Park | Mountain gorillas; the reason most travellers come to Uganda. Four trekking sectors with different access and accommodation. | Read more |
| Queen Elizabeth National Park | Savannah game drives, the Kazinga Channel boat trip and Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions. Sits between Bwindi and the northern parks. | Read more |
| Murchison Falls National Park | The Nile at its most dramatic, big game and a genuine northern-Uganda contrast. Adds distance but justifies itself on longer circuits. | Read more |
| Kibale National Park | Chimpanzee tracking; Uganda’s best-known chimp destination, with several habituated groups and good forest birding. | Read more |
| Kalinzu Forest Reserve | A more route-efficient chimpanzee option on some western circuits, near Queen Elizabeth’s Ishasha sector. | Read more |
| Mgahinga Gorilla National Park | Uganda’s smallest national park (33.7 km²) in the Virunga Volcanoes. It protects the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family and offers golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking, a short drive from the Cyanika border with Rwanda. | Read more |

Why Orugano Bwindi Lodge Is Part of the Picture
Orugano Bwindi Lodge is our own boutique lodge in the Nkuringo sector of southern Bwindi, approximately 10–15 minutes’ walk from the Nkuringo gorilla trekking briefing point. It has 14 private cottages with forest and Virunga views, full board, packed trekking lunches, boot and shoe cleaning after wet trails, hot-water bottles for cold mornings, laundry, guided local walks, and road access to Rushaga when an itinerary requires it.
We recommend it specifically for travellers trekking from Nkuringo rather than as a blanket base for every Bwindi sector — on other routes, different accommodation is usually more practical. Orugano Safaris and Orugano Bwindi Lodge are under common ownership, which means accommodation, permits, transfers and trekking logistics can be coordinated directly by one team. You can read more on the Orugano Bwindi Lodge page and our guide to where to stay in Bwindi.

Frequently Asked Questions About Uganda Safaris
How many days do I need for a Uganda safari?
Three to four days cover a gorilla trek on its own. To add chimpanzees and one or two savannah parks, plan on eight to ten days. Twelve or more allows a full western and northern circuit at a reasonable pace. Our guide on how many days a Uganda safari needs walks through each option.
Is gorilla trekking in Uganda worth it compared with Rwanda?
Uganda offers more than gorillas: chimpanzees, savannah parks and the Nile are all within one country, which suits longer itineraries. Rwanda offers a shorter transfer from Kigali for a gorilla-only trip. The right choice depends on your dates, budget and how much of the region you want to see.
Are gorilla sightings guaranteed?
No — sightings are never guaranteed. The gorilla families are habituated, and UWA trackers locate each family’s position each morning before the trek begins, so sightings are usual, but the forests are wild and no operator can promise the result.
Which airport should I fly into?
Entebbe International Airport suits circuits that include Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Kigali is usually faster for gorilla-focused trips to southern Bwindi. The decision shapes the whole route, so it is worth settling early.
Can I combine gorillas with chimpanzees?
Yes, and most longer itineraries do. Kibale is the best-known chimpanzee destination and Kalinzu works well on some western routes. A permit-led plan sequences both so the driving between them stays reasonable.
Do I need a 4×4, or can I fly?
A private 4×4 with a driver-guide is standard for our road itineraries, and it handles the last stretches to the trailheads better than a regular vehicle. Flying between Entebbe and Kisoro is an option when road time is short; our fly-in itinerary covers that routing.
